What is feminism to you? Society often misconstrues what feminism is. Feminism is gender equality. Feminism is not about female domination. It is certainly not about man hating – this misconstrued ideology needs to stop. Feminism is a movement for all genders to have equal rights and opportunities. It is the movement of political and social equality of the genders.

How has gender inequality affected you? Have you ever dropped out of a beloved sport of yours because it is seen as too feminine or too masculine? Have you ever been sexually objectified by other individuals through social media or in person? Are you a male afraid to express your feelings because it is seen as too feminine? Are you a woman afraid to wear certain clothing, because of the lingering fear of individuals labeling you as too provocative or a prude? Are you afraid to identify yourself as a feminist? Women and men are choosing not to identify themselves as feminists. Th is is because it is seen as unattractive, because our expressions are seen as too strong, too hostile, isolating and anti-men.

Why has the word become intolerable? We need to stop defining ourselves as something we are not because of social expectations, and start defining ourselves by who we are. Women deserve the opportunity to be free from preconception. However, men also deserve the opportunity to feel vulnerable without it being portrayed as effeminate. Both men and women deserve the opportunity to feel empowered, both men and women deserve the opportunity to feel equal. We are all human. We need to perceive gender on a spectrum instead of two opposing ideals. We all deserve the opportunity to be set free from the prison of gender inequality.
